The first time I heard “Ex-factor.”  I was at my boyfriend’s house and we were fighting. We’ve fought many times before, but this time was different. He hit me, in sync with the melodious beat, as if my body was the instruments in the song’s composition. We were fighting over something silly. ♪♫ This is crazy, this is crazy, oh this is crazy ♪♫” A verbal disagreement about his kid’s mother turned into a physical altercation that threaten the life of our kid in my womb. “♪♫ Where you, when I needed you ♪♫” I jumped up and charged at him, all I wanted was reciprocity,♪♫ Tell me, who I have to be ♪♫” I felt Lauryn’s cries as, I sobbed hitting him back, over and over again, as she continues to sing out, “♪♫ loving you is like a battle, and we both end up with scars ♪♫” He tried to restrain me, but my adrenaline was too high. I scratched him; pinched him; bit him; anything to hurt him. For him to be left with scars too. But the scars I had, were deeper than any external damage. My heart was scarred, my pride was bruised, my dignity broken. Why? Because I loved this man, the song blaring out, ♪♫ No one loves you more than me, and no one ever will ♪♫I felt that exact way. He knew it too, the look of regret on his face showed it all. The raging bull, turned into a gentle blue bird as he apologized. He toned down his Wu-tang rap, turning his beat break into Lauryn Hill’s neo-soul. ♪♫ It could all be so simple ♪♫We were a mess, toxic lovers caught in a poisonous bond. The first time I heard, “Ex-factor,” I decided to love him a little less each day. ♪♫ See I know what we have to do, you let go, and I’ll let go too ♪♫
